Come on here boys and girls, I'll tell you a rather tragic story about a popular community which was promising and filled with great artists around the world, and which now is a bottomless pit of awful fanarts, pedophiles and sick deviants (and not "deviants" as "members of the DA community"), and self-entitled teenagers who can't draw or write, but go into a faving/giving llamas spree just for the sake of it.
I've been part of DA since July 6th, 2004. Yes: some of my old art is crap like the ones I'm complaining about, but I digress. In that time, DA was a rather small artists' community, in which a lot of gifted artists (illustrators, photographers, writers, designers, and the talented average person) shared their artwork with everyone. Back then, it was customary to thank other persons for favs (darned llamas didn't exist back in 2004) and to ask them for a little comment about your artwork.
But everything changed, when millenials attacked.
I have nothing against millenials, but some of them aren't quite fond of following the rules; instead making anything they want, or getting things the way they want, not caring about other persons or the communities they belong.
I've been discussing my "if you have a disclaimer about not getting thanked for favs or llamas, then I'll block you" policy with some persons this week, and many of them are very passionate about their right to refuse to thank or read/get those "thank you" messages, which they call "spam". For starters: who doesn't want to get thanked? It feels good to know there's people that appreciate you took your time to fav some piece of art, or give a llama to a random stranger. They call those messages "spam", since they think the messages from their friends will get buried among those "thank you" messages.
Kids: I introduce you to the "Notes", which you can find clicking on the envelope thingie up there, then choosing the item "Notes" on the menu. That way, you can send all the messages you want to your friends, and better else: they're private, so no one can see them but the destinatary.
Also, remember you're now part of an artists' community. Even if you're just lurking around, you're still part of DeviantART. There are persons like me who appreciate not only favs and llamas, but also comments about our artwork and good discussions about several topics of interest. Not because you don't like get thanked for favs and llamas, people will stop thanking you. Please understand: you're now part of a community, and there are several non-written rules you need to know. For the sake of getting in good terms with everyone.
Doing rude things like asking for free drawings/illustrations, bugging people for llamas and that darn "PLEASE DON'T THANK ME" thing, won't do you any favors on DA.
I know I'll get into a shitstorm for this, but this is my point of view. Even if you are not agree, I really thank you for taking your time to read this journal.
P.S. Yes, I draw cute little bunnies for a living. DEAL WITH IT.
